Refrigerated type

Portable air conditioners work in a similar fashion to split system air conditioners. The difference is a split system extracts heat from a room and transfers it outside via refrigerated pipes. Which means the hot air is blown out of the outdoor unit.           Video - How does a split system work

With a portable air conditioner the heat is blown out of the unit via a duct which runs out the back of the portable air conditioner. This means you need to have the duct running out of a window or door or some other part of the home that allows the heat to be blown outside.

If the heat is not removed out of the room the temperature will not go down.

One other difference between a split system and a portable air conditioner is that split units are located high on the wall of a room which is where heat rises too. So the heat in the room is being extracted near the ceiling.

Portable air conditioners sit closer to the floor which means the heat rising to the ceiling is not being extracted as effectively. The use of a ceiling fan can help to bring the hot air closer to the portable air conditioner so it can be extracted outside.

Some models have different features also. Refrigerated units need to have the water collected in the units tray emptied manually.

Evaporative type

Portable airconditioners also come in the evaporative type of air conditioning. This type of air conditioning cools buy using a fan to blow air over pads that have water running over them. The water is evaporated and becomes cool air. The main difference between this and refigerated air conditioning is that evaporative cooling adds moisture to the air. Refrigerated air conditioners remove moisture from the air. It is not advisable to use evaporative cooling in areas that have high humidity or on high humidity days. Also, this type of cooling needs water added to the unit constantly.

It really comes down to personal choice as to what cooling suits you.
